Cenni generici sullo sviluppo degli ekranoplani sul mar caspio.

Il mar Caspio è la più grande massa d’acqua chiusa della Terra, ed è classificato come il più grande lago del mondo. L'ekranoplano o schermoplano invece è l'anello di congiunzione tra l'idrovolante e l'aliscafo. Questo gigantesco aeromobile si muoveva volando a pochi metri dalla superficie (in genere sull'acqua), sfruttando per il sostentamento l'effetto suolo. Sostanzialmente una volta che il mezzo ha accelerato si sviluppa al di sotto di esso quello che può essere definito come un cuscino d'aria dinamico. L'Ekranoplan KM è stato il primo ed il più grande ecranoplano mai costruito. L’ambizioso programma KM (Korabl’ Maket, letteralmente: modello di nave) fu lanciato in Unione Sovietica nel 1963. Lo scopo di questo programma top secret, che venne portato avanti nel Mar Caspio, era sviluppare un mezzo che avesse la velocità di un aereo e le capacità di trasporto di una nave. Il primo prototipo, il KM-1, “volò” per la prima volta nell’ottobre 1966. Tale mezzo è conosciuto in Occidente con il nome di Caspian Sea Monster, che gli venne attribuito dall'intelligence statunitense, quando uno di questi venne avvistato da un satellite nel Mar Caspio. Il primo volo risale all’ottobre 1966, e la produzione totale ammonta ad otto esemplari, che vennero costruiti tra il 1965 ed il 1978. L’attività sperimentale fu funestata da vari incidenti.

I KM erano di dimensioni gigantesche: infatti, la lunghezza poteva variare dai 92 ai 106 metri, a seconda delle modifiche. La larghezza raggiungeva i 46 metri, e l’altezza degli enormi piani orizzontali di coda era di 22 metri. Il peso era nell’ordine delle 540 tonnellate. La propulsione era assicurata da due reattori Dobryin VD-7 collocati ai lati della deriva. Altri otto reattori dello stesso tipo servivano invece per il controllo aerodinamico, posti su un asse nei pressi della cabina, sulla fusoliera. I motori erano sistemati simmetricamente rispetto alla fusoliera, nel numero di quattro per parte.

Tutto il programa venne cancellato nel 1992, in seguito al crollo dell'URSS e alla conseguente crisi economica.

The Institute was founded by the Brazilian physician and biomedical scientist Vital Brazil in 1901, according to Pasteur Institute paradigm, i.e., by combining in the same institution medical research, the transfer of the results to society as health products, and self-financing through this later activity. Its foundation was a reaction to the outbreak of bubonic plague in the city of Santos. It is internationally renowned for its research on venomous animals. It is also a state-supported producer of vaccines against many infectious diseases, such as rabies, hepatitis, botulism, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis and tuberculosis, as well as polyvalent and monovalent antivenoms against the bites of snakes, lizards, bees, scorpions and spiders (which, historically were first developed in the beginning of the 20th century by Dr. Vital Brazil and his coworkers).

A fire in 2010 destroyed the collection facility, which maintained one of the largest collections of venomous animals in the world, comprising around 80,000 snake specimens, and an estimated 450,000 spiders and scorpions.

The name of the institute comes from "Butantã" , a district in the west of the "município de São Paulo". "Butantã" itself is a Tupi word meaning "crushed soil".

Ecco le cinque leggi fondamentali della stupidità:

Sempre e inevitabilmente ognuno di noi sottovaluta il numero di individui stupidi in circolazione.
La probabilità che una certa persona sia stupida è indipendente da qualsiasi altra caratteristica della persona stessa.
Una persona è stupida se causa un danno a un'altra persona o ad un gruppo di persone senza realizzare alcun vantaggio per sé o addirittura subendo un danno.
Le persone non stupide sottovalutano sempre il potenziale nocivo delle persone stupide; dimenticano costantemente che in qualsiasi momento e luogo, e in qualunque circostanza, trattare o associarsi con individui stupidi costituisce infallibilmente un costoso errore.
La persona stupida è il tipo di persona più pericoloso che esista.

Come si vede dalla terza legge, ci sono due fattori da considerare per indagare il comportamento umano:

Danni o vantaggi che l'individuo procura a sé stesso
Danni o vantaggi che l'individuo procura agli altri

Creando un grafico col primo fattore sull'asse delle ascisse e il secondo sull'asse delle ordinate si ottengono quindi quattro gruppi di persone:

Intelligenti (in alto a destra): fanno il proprio vantaggio e quello degli altri
Sprovveduti (in alto a sinistra): danneggiano sé stessi e avvantaggiano gli altri

Laughter and disgust. It’s the only response you can have towards The Sprinkle Brigade. The three-member collective was created in New York in 2005. “We officially began sprinklin’ in the winter months of that year, with the goal being to take the city’s most disgusting attribute - dog poo - and make it hilarious. By dressing it up, we were putting a new face on a tired, old, miserable subject,” they explain. “Since everyone has stumbled upon dog poo at one point or another in their life, the immediacy of seeing it decorated for the first time will leave a very lasting impression.”

None of them are dog owners. Instead, they walk around the “poop-heavy areas in the city” with props, looking for excretions to reinvent. It’s a slow process. “Sometimes trophy-winning ideas sit on the shelf for months because the shape isn’t right,” they muse. “You gotta be patient. It’s a great feeling when you see the perfect piece and it fits with the props.” They’ve dressed poo up to look like puppets, snails and, most disturbingly, birthday cakes.

Their work is a great comment on pushing our physical boundaries, questioning what we find revolting and funny, re-examining an ignored part of the street. “The streets are a form of public theatre. And dog poo is always cast as the enemy. It draws equal scorn and disgust from all who see it. Our goal is to reverse the curse and make it entertaining, while still reminding you that it shouldn’t be there in the first place.”

Conosciuto come Jim Jones (Lynn, 13 maggio 1931 – Jonestown, 18 novembre 1978) è stato un predicatore statunitense. Fondatore della congregazione religiosa Tempio del popolo (Peoples Temple), è conosciuto per avere indotto 911 membri della sua congregazione, anche bambini e neonati, ad uno spaventoso massacro e suicidio di massa a Jonestown (Guyana), e per avere fatto uccidere nove persone nella vicina pista aerea di atterraggio, tra cui un deputato del Congresso degli Stati Uniti.

Jim Jones nacque a Lynn, un piccolo villaggio situato nel confine dell'Ohio. Suo padre, James Jones, iscritto al Ku Klux Klan, era tornato dalla prima guerra mondiale con un problema al polmone talmente grave che gli fu riconosciuta l'invalidità.

L'indigenza della famiglia spinse Jim a frequentare le chiese del villaggio, appassionandosi ad improvvisare dei sermoni con gli amici e a bacchettare chi facesse rumore durante il salmo. La comunità - che si batteva contro la speculazione edilizia e gli sfratti, propugnando una sorta di socialismo apostolico - raccolse numerosi diseredati, soprattutto di colore.

Jones appoggiò il candidato democratico George Moscone, che venne eletto sindaco di San Francisco; quest'ultimo nominò Jones membro della Commissione interna comunale.

Ma Jones iniziava a dare segni di squilibrio; asseriva di essere in grado di compiere miracoli e le prime voci di molestie sessuali nei confronti di alcuni adepti cominciarono a diffondersi.

Messo sotto accusa da più parti, Jones si accordò segretamente con il governo della Guyana per ottenere alcuni lotti di terreno nella giungla. Nell'estate del 1977, più di mille persone si trasferirono con un ponte aereo di cargo e voli charter nella nuova "terra promessa" di Jonestown, voluta e creata dal reverendo in mezzo alla fitta vegetazione e isolata dal mondo esterno. Jones scelse quel posto perché lo riteneva luogo ideale per pregare e salvarsi da un olocausto nucleare.

Nel 1978 il deputato del Congresso Leo Ryan si recò in visita a Jonestown assieme ad un gruppo di giornalisti per verificare cosa accadesse nella comunità; durante la sua permanenza, ricevette un biglietto di aiuto e denuncia per le condizioni di schiavitù in seno alla comunità. Ma le guardie del corpo di Jones scoprirono il tradimento e uccisero a colpi di mitra il deputato e la sua scorta vicino all'aereo prima del decollo.

Il giorno seguente, il 18 novembre 1978, il reverendo Jones annunciò alla comunità che "per difendersi dall'imminente invasione delle forze del Male" tutti i fedeli del People's Temple avrebbero dovuto uccidersi: fece distribuire un cocktail di Flavor Aid al cianuro, dopo aver loro promesso un aldilà utopistico.

Il reverendo venne trovato morto con un colpo di proiettile alla testa; attorno a lui giacevano i corpi di 911 persone. I sopravvissuti del People's Temple furono 122, tra cui il figlio di Jones.

Animals all over the country are homeless, injured, or put to sleep because their owners can't afford the surgery or the medicine.

I watch Animal Planet almost every day. I see that Michigan has lots of problems with animals there. There are even lots of dogfights there, too.

My suggestion is that each animal, animal hospital, pound, and animal shelter should get money to raise the animals there, and not put them to sleep. Some pets are put to sleep because they're aggressive. Can you think of a way to help them and find them a permanent home?

It was August 1959, and the Los Angeles-based musical group known as Big Daddy had finally wangled a recording contract. Their manager, wanting to give the waxing as much of a push as possible, got the band booked on a USO tour of Southeast Asia, hoping for some positive publicity. Unfortunately, the United States had no military involvement in Southeast Asia in 1959, or so the official story said, and therefore the publicity value of the tour would have turned out to be nil - had the band come back at all, which it hadn't. Given up for dead after their vehicle was found mired in quicksand, the band spent the next twenty-four years in the custody of Laotian revolutionaries. Rock and roll musicians being at least as unpopular with the U.S. government and its official radio service as were the Communists, the Laotians more or less adopted Big Daddy as Fellow Travelers. The war, of course, went on, and during the Sixties and Seventies, returning US troops told tales of an American band being held captive. Special Forces were eventually able to piece together the story, and after the usual interminable delays, a rescue attempt was mounted in 1983, under the guise of a British motion-picture production. Finally back in the States, Big Daddy agonized about that first recording session they had missed. Of course, during the intervening years, their record company, like so many little diskeries, had folded, and worried that the band might become a burden to the taxpayers, government officials brought in some sheet music and arranged a recording session at Camp David. The sessions were startling; although the band still had its chops, having been allowed to play by their captors all those years, the cultural isolation of northern Laos meant that Big Daddy had heard virtually none of the last two decades' worth of popular music, which meant that their recordings of Seventies and Eighties material, all that could be found in the nearest sheet-music store, were perforce arranged for Fifties performance styles. The record, of course, was unreleasable, so naturally it fell to Rhino Records to release it.

It was there, in early 1852, that Cora first exhibited her ability to fall into a trance and write messages and speak in ways very unlike herself. Lake Vostok has been covered by the vast Antarctic ice sheet for up to 25 million years. The lake was named for the Russian research station that sits above its southern tip - a place where in 1983 the temperature fell below -129°F (-89°C), the coldest ever recorded temperature on Earth. More than 145 lakes have been identified beneath the thick Antarctic ice sheet. Most of these lakes, covered between 3-4 kilometers of ice, are several kilometers long. One of these lakes, Lake Vostok, is an order of magnitude larger than all other known lakes.

Bacteria found in refrozen lake water at the bottom of the Vostok ice core could be part of an indigenous ecosystem below that's been living in the cold, dark waters for millions of years. Lake Vostok has been isolated from open exchange with the atmosphere for several million years. No one knows how any organism, cut off from air, sunlight or any apparent source of life-sustaining energy, could survive in its frigid waters or under such crushing pressure of more than 360 times the atmospheric pressure at sea level.

Vozrozhdeniya Island,is a former island, now a peninsula, in the Aral Sea. It became a peninsula in 2002, due to ongoing shrinkage of the Aral Sea. It is now shared by Kazakhstan andUzbekistan.

Located in the central Aral Sea, Vozrozhdeniya Island was one of the main laboratories and testing sites for theSoviet Union’s Microbiological Warfare Group. In 1948, a top-secret Soviet bioweaponslaboratory was established here, which tested a variety of agents, includinganthrax,plague,brucellosis, andtularemia.

In the 1990s, word of the island's danger was spread by Soviet defectors, includingKen Alibek, the former head of the Soviet Union's bioweapons program.It was here, according to just released documents, that anthrax sporesand bubonic plaguebacilli were made into weapons and stored. The main town on the island wasKantubek, which lies in ruins today, but once had approximately 1,500 inhabitants.

The laboratory staff members abandoned the small island in 1992.Many of the containers holding the spores were not properly stored or destroyed, and over the last decade many of these containers have developed leaks. As the water level of the Aral Sea continues to recede, the area will eventually connect further with the surrounding land.

King Joshua Abraham Norton

Joshua Abraham Norton (c. 1819 – January 8, 1880), the self-proclaimed His Imperial Majesty Emperor Norton I, was a celebrated citizen of San Francisco, California, who in 1859 proclaimed himself "Emperor of these United States" and subsequently "Protector of Mexico."

Born in London, Norton spent most of his early life in South Africa. He emigrated to San Francisco in 1849 after receiving a bequest of $40,000 from his father's estate. Norton initially made a living as a businessman, but he lost his fortune investing in Peruvian rice.

After losing a lawsuit in which he tried to void his rice contract, Norton left San Francisco. He returned a few years later, apparently mentally unbalanced, claiming to be the emperor of the United States. Although he had no political power, and his influence extended only so far as he was humored by those around him, he was treated deferentially in San Francisco, and currency issued in his name was honored in the establishments he frequented.

Though he was considered insane, or at least highly eccentric, the citizens of San Francisco celebrated his regal presence and his proclamations, most famously, his "order" that the United States Congress be dissolved by force (which Congress and the U.S. Army ignored) and his numerous decrees calling for a bridge and a tunnel to be built across San Francisco Bay (which both happened long after his death in the form of the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge and the Transbay Tube). On January 8, 1880, Norton collapsed at a street corner, and died before he could be given medical treatment. The following day, nearly 30,000 people packed the streets of San Francisco to pay homage to Norton. In December 2004, a resolution was made to name the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge in honor of Norton, but the idea did not progress further.

The islands are a territory of France. There are no indigenous inhabitants, but France maintains a permanent presence of 50 to 100 scientists, engineers and researchers.

The main island, Grande Terre, is 6,675 km² in area and is surrounded by another 300 smaller islands and islets, forming an archipelago of 7,215 km². The climate is raw and chilly with frequent high winds, but not severely cold throughout the year, much like that of the outer Aleutian Islands of Alaska. While the surrounding seas are generally rough, they remain ice-free year-round.

They are antipodal to an area in the vicinity of the meeting point of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Montana in North America.

sapere enciclopedico, e nemmeno arte drammatica.

Parlerei piuttosto di letteratura gastronomica. I dialoghi

– quando presenti – vengono conditi con una

manciata di generici consigli destinati agli attori (“attraversò

la strada in diagonale come un cane azzoppato…”),

agli operatori e ai direttori della

fotografia (“il busto dell’uomo venne investito dall’ombra

di un lampione mezzo rotto che oscillava

mosso dal vento…”), ai costumisti (“gli stracci raffazzonati

che aveva addosso avevano l’aria di essere

stati gialli…”), agli scenografi (“la porta di lamiera

ondulata pendeva in bilico su un solo cardine…”),

ai fonici (“una cornacchia gracchiava in lontananza,

come fanno sempre quegli uccelli…”) e agli altri

tecnici (“tutta la scena deve svolgersi in un silenzio

imperscrutabile…”).

Il testo ha il compito di offrire indicazioni quantitative,

codificabili attraverso elementari principi di

matematica, riguardo a giorni di riprese, collaboratori,

lampadine, cavi, panini, caffè, ruote di scorta,

nonché durata e resistenza dei nervi.

Il bravo sceneggiatore è tenuto ad aggiungere

due o tre scene superflue che, in caso si verifichi

un ritardo sul calendario (come del resto accade

sempre), il produttore o il regista potranno platealmente

tagliare al fine di ribadire la padronanza

del soggetto e la propria collocazione gerarchica

all’interno dell’organico.

Di tanto in tanto è comunque bene inserire una

riga di qualche valore letterario con lo scopo di concentrare

l’attenzione dei potenziali finanziatori sul

contenuto poetico del progetto, evitando allo stesso

tempo che l’effetto soporifero della sfilza di dettagli

tecnici comprometta la piacevolezza della lettura.

Nella sceneggiatura vigono le seguenti norme

drammaturgiche: il film deve avere tre tempi (di durata

imprecisata e non suddivisi nel testo) e tutti i

personaggi principali vanno fatti entrare in scena

entro ventisette minuti dall’inizio del film. È sconsigliato

scrivere più di due pagine di dialoghi poiché

la riduzione o completa eliminazione degli stessi durante

le riprese determina un inutile aumento dei

costi. Inoltre deve essere chiaro a tutti che per sua

natura un film non è la rappresentazione dei pensieri

che dominano il protagonista, ma è preferibile che

sia l’azione stessa a suggerire le eventuali emozioni.

Ad esempio la collocazione della sigaretta tra le dita

di un personaggio è sufficiente a distinguerlo dal cane

di Pavlov. Sta allo spettatore cogliere l’intima tempesta

che pervade lo spirito umano.

Concludo segnalando che i produttori cinematografici

apprezzano gli sceneggiatori che esprimono

l’intensità drammatica con mezzi più discreti

dei cataclismi naturali, degli aerei che precipitano e

dell’occupazione del Palazzo d’Inverno.

Her girlfriend left but she found she was not alone in the house. "Let me speak," said the hair. She recognized it as one of her own. She had thought it was gone forever, but forever does not always last very long.

"I am amazed to see a hair stand alone, upright in the air," she said. "So speak."

The hair had a brassy light in its shaft. It stood and shone and swayed, and a wave ran up it and down and the frequency of the wave was such that a clear note was laid upon the air, and so the hair began to sing, and it sang these words: "Many a little makes a mickle, once bitten twice shy, time and tide wait for no man, a penny saved is a penny earned."

She assented to everything the hair said, and felt in her heart that the hair was right, and furthermore he cut a gallant figure, did slim, insinuating Mr Hair. Would she step out with him? Why yes.
At the appointed hour the hair came back and it brought friends. Together they swayed and arched like a wave. Light struck deep into the glassy swells. One hair curled and bounced like spindrift above the rest.

"Trust no man, though he be your brother," sang the hair, "who has hair one color, and a beard another. Loose lips sink ships. Out of sight, out of mind." She held out her hands, and the hair coiled around her wrists once, twice, many times. Then it towed her into the wave.

But when she was alone again, her heart changed, and the sight of her own hair on her shoulders filled her with loathing, and so she took clippers in hand and gave herself a buzz cut. All the hairs rose up upon the kitchen floor and danced around her feet, and then one by one they threaded themselves through the keyhole and were gone.

Now she entered into a time of trial. If she bent over a nosegay in a glass, a hair whipped itself many times around her nose and tweaked it. A hair lay coiled in every soup spoon she brought to her lips. She loathed lawns and would not picnic, because the hairs hidden among the grass blades bent over the cloth and nodded mockingly at her.

Now when she walked down the street the children shouted after her: "Mistress Mary quite contrary how does your garden fare? With silver hairs and golden hairs and hairy hairy hairy hair!"

At the museum she saw the hair in a Hogarth; it was disguised as a line, but she found it out, because she marked how sinuous and solitary it was, and that it was not content to stay coiled in the skirt of a bawd, but slung itself around a drunkard's throat, humped along the back of a cur snarling at a rat, and arched from a lad's trousers to the puddle on the ground. "There's my hair," she said. "I would know it anywhere." And she did: she knew it on the back seat of a car, recumbent between floor boards, on the shoulder of a gentleman's tweed overcoat, in the gutter of a book open to a page on which a careful reader would find the word "lies" written six times over, on a bus, in a restaurant, in a video store, at a lecture, at a political rally.

She took a walk in the park. She mounted a small rise, and the sun struck through the trees at her, and blinded her as she advanced. She shaded her eyes and saw a blazing shield. Between two trees, across the path, hung a spider's web as big as a garden gate. It was almost complete; a shining spider stepped, conjured the silk from its abdomen, stretched the line, dipped, rose, and let it snap into place. But it was not silk, no, the spider was spinning a web of hair. She ran from the horrible thing.

When she got home, she started a letter to her girlfriend. An old fashioned letter, on paper. She signed her name at the bottom. But when she lifted her pen, she pulled her signature straight. Then all her words unraveled. The letters lost their loops and slithered right off the page. She had written a letter to her lover. Oh, what had the letter said?

The hair is a subtle spirit, and noose to our passions. It counsels policy, silence and circumspection, and its songs incite no candid lunge to pen or gun, but the slow asphyxiation of deceit. In its coils the very breath studies cunning. Once broken, the body rises lightly and easily to the lie, and if you ever slip, the hair will knot around your neck, and hoist you up.

Unlike grizzly bears, polar bears are not territorial. Although stereotyped as being voraciously aggressive, they are normally cautious in confrontations, and often choose to escape rather than fight.

Fat polar bears rarely attack humans unless severely provoked, whereas hungry polar bears are extremely unpredictable and are known to kill and sometimes eat humans.

Polar bears are stealth hunters, and the victim is often unaware of the bear's presence until the attack is underway. Whereas brown bears often maul a person and then leave, polar bear attacks are more likely to be predatory and are almost always fatal. However, due to the very small human population around the Arctic, such attacks are rare.

In general, adult polar bears live solitary lives. Yet, they have often been seen playing together for hours at a time and even sleeping in an embrace,^[51] and polar bear zoologist Nikita Ovsianikov has described adult males as having "well-developed friendships." Cubs are especially playful as well. Among young males in particular, play-fighting may be a means of practicing for serious competition during mating seasons later in life.

In 1992, a photographer near Churchill took a now widely circulated set of photographs of a polar bear playing with a Canadian Eskimo Dog a tenth of its size.^[61]^[62] The pair wrestled harmlessly together each afternoon for ten days in a row for no apparent reason, although the bear may have been trying to demonstrate its friendliness in the hope of sharing the kennel's food.

This kind of social interaction is uncommon; it is far more typical for polar bears to behave aggressively towards dogs.

Neutral point of view is a fundamental principle of Wikipedia, and no one with a neutral perspective could claim that, over the six months during which we were engaged in a sexual relationship, my performance was "lackluster," "uninspired," or "noob-ish" (or, indeed, "noobian"). Nor could the physical intimacy we shared—which at the time you clearly found extremely satisfying—be objectively described as "unsettling [like] watching the films of David Lynch in a car without a working handbrake while parked near the edge of a cliff."
As a result of edits like these, I have been made to repeatedly revert the article to previous versions, where, you might remember, you described the physical act of love between us as "better than [you] imagined [possible]," "really sweet," and "well-intentioned."
Locking the article has also become necessary to prevent the constant reinsertion of a section with the heading "Like a Cowardly Slug That's Just Spotted a Pile of Salt," detailing at length the uncharacteristically unsatisfying night we shared in a Paris hotel last summer. As I made clear several times on the talk page of our sex life, that was a completely unrepresentative occasion and is therefore excluded from the article on the basis of a lack of notability.

The telephone and its several inventors.

A traditional landline telephone system, also known as "plain old telephone service" (POTS), commonly handles both signaling and audio information on the same twisted pair of insulated wires: the telephone line. Although originally designed for voice communication, the system has been adapted for data communication such as Telex, Fax and Internetcommunication. The signaling equipment consists of a bell, beeper, light or other device to alert the user to incoming calls, and number buttons or a rotary dial to enter a telephone number for outgoing calls. A twisted pair line is preferred as it is more effective at rejecting electromagnetic interference (EMI) and crosstalk than an untwisted pair.

The telephone consists of an alerting device, usually a ringer, that remains connected to the phone line whenever the phone is "on hook", and other components which are connected when the phone is "off hook". These include a transmitter (microphone), a receiver (speaker) and other circuits for dialing, filtering, and amplification. A calling partywishing to speak to another party will pick up the telephone's handset, thus operating a button switch or "switchhook", which puts the telephone into an active (off hook) state by connecting the transmitter (microphone), receiver (speaker) and related audio components to the line. This circuitry has a low resistance (less than 300 Ohms) which causes DC current (48 volts, nominal) from the telephone exchange to flow through the line. The exchange detects this DC current, attaches a digit receiver circuit to the line, and sends a dial tone to indicate readiness. On a modern telephone, the calling party then presses the number buttons in a sequence corresponding to the telephone number of the called party. The buttons are connected to a tone generator circuit that produces DTMF tones which end up at a circuit at the exchange. A rotary dial telephone employs pulse dialing, sending electrical pulses corresponding to the telephone number to the exchange. (Most exchanges are still equipped to handle pulse dialing.) Fu solo nel 1831 che l'ufficiale francese Victor Sganzin trovò sulla costa orientale alcuni indigeni che usavano come recipiente per l'acqua un uovo del diametro di oltre 30 cm. L'uovo, inviato a un commerciante di Città del Capo, e da lui a Parigi, affondò con la nave che lo portava. Nel 1848 il commerciante Dumarèle vide un uovo gigantesco in possesso di un capo indigeno, il quale gli disse che l'uccello che lo deponeva esisteva ancora nella vicina foresta. La notizia destò interesse in tutto il mondo, ma nessuno riuscì a trovare e a catturare il grande uccello. Nel 1850 però furono spedite a Parigi tre uova e alcuni frammenti: i molti scienziati che li esaminarono dettero pareri diversi sulla natura dell'uccello che le aveva deposte.

Ogni uovo era enorme: con un peso di oltre 12 kg e contenente 8 litri, pari a 7 uova di struzzo ovvero oltre 180 di gallina.

Il pallone, dopo aver preso origine in un certo punto della

Quattordicesima Strada, la cui esatta posizione non

posso rivelare, si dilatò durante la notte verso nord, mentre

la gente dormiva, fino a raggiungere il Parco. Là lo feci

fermare; all’alba i bordi settentrionali stazionavano sopra

il Plaza; il movimento in sospensione libera era lieve e

gentile. Ma avvertendo un vago senso di disagio all’idea

che dovesse fermarsi, anche al fine di proteggere gli alberi,

e non essendoci inoltre alcuna ragione per cui al pallone

non fosse concesso di dilatarsi verso l’alto, sia pure su

quelle parti della città che già copriva, su verso lo “spazio

aereo” raggiungibile, dissi ai tecnici di provvedere in tal

senso. Questa ulteriore dilatazione ebbe luogo in mattinata,

leggero impercettibile sospirare di gas attraverso le

valvole. Il pallone arrivò quindi a coprire quarantacinque

isolati in direzione nord-sud e una zona irregolarmente

di idee geniali per ogni tipo di mezzo espressivo,

opere di bellezza davvero singolare e allo stesso tempo

autentiche pietre miliari nel corso della storia del gonfiaggio,

ma in quel momento c’era solo quel pallone, concreto

specifico, sospeso lassù.

Ci furono delle reazioni. Alcune persone trovarono il

pallone “interessante”. Questa pareva reazione inadeguata

all’immensità del pallone, alla repentinità della sua

apparizione sulla città; d’altra parte, in assenza d’isterismo

collettivo o d’altra forma di agitazione sociopsicologica,

la si deve giudicare una reazione serena, “matura”.

Ci fu all’inizio una discussione non trascurabile intorno

al “significato” del pallone; si acquietò presto, tuttavia,

poiché ci è stato insegnato a non insistere troppo sulla ricerca

dei significati, tanto che oggi è perfino raro che li si

cerchi davvero, salvo che nei casi relativi ai fenomeni più

una discussione prolungata era inutile, o comunque meno

l’occasione per scriverci sopra dei messaggi, dichiarandosi

disponibili per atti contro natura, o facendo presente

la disponibilità di certe loro conoscenze.

I ragazzini più intraprendenti ci saltavano sopra, specialmente

in quei punti dove il pallone era molto vicino a

un edificio, per cui la distanza tra pallone e edificio era

questione di pochi centimetri, o in punti in cui il pallone

veniva addirittura a contatto con l’edificio, esercitando

una leggerissima pressione contro un lato di esso, tanto

che pallone e edificio parevano una cosa sola. La superficie

superiore era sagomata in modo da presentare una

sorta di “paesaggio”: piccole valli come pure lievi pendii

o collinette. Giunti in cima al pallone, era possibile fare

una passeggiata, e perfino un viaggetto da una località all’altra.

Era gradevole correre giù per una discesa e poi su

per l’opposta salita, l’una e l’altra in dolce pendenza, oppure

spiccare un salto da un versante all’altro. Si rimbalzava

agevolmente, poiché la superficie era pneumatica, e

volendo ci si poteva anche lasciar cadere senza danno.

Che tutti questi vari movimenti, come anche altri, rientrassero

nell’ambito del possibile, nel corso dell’esplorazione

della parte alta del pallone, era cosa eccezionalmente

eccitante per i bambini, abituati alla superficie piatta e

dura della città: un’autentica festa. Ma lo scopo reale del

pallone non era quello di far divertire i bambini.

Inoltre, c’è da notare che il numero di quelli, adulti e

bambini,che approfittarono delle opportunità descritte

non fu poi così massiccio come avrebbe potuto essere: fu

rilevata una certa riluttanza, una certa diffidenza verso il

pallone. Ci fu perfino una qualche ostilità. Avendo noi celato

le pompe che iniettavano elio nell’interno, ed essendo

la superficie tanto vasta che le autorità non riuscirono

a localizzare il punto d’entrata – cioè il punto dove veniva

immesso il gas – si rilevò un certo grado di frustrazione

nei funzionari preposti alle zone più direttamente interessate

dal fenomeno. Irritante senza dubbio era l’apparente

mancanza di motivazione del pallone (come lo era il

fatto che esso si trovasse proprio “lì”). Se sulle fiancate

del pallone avessimo scritto a caratteri cubitali: “dimostrazioni

di prove di laboratorio” o anche: “più efficace del 18%” tale disagio sarebbe stato evitato.

Ma io non avevo affatto intenzione di farlo. Tutto sommato

bisogna ammettere che i funzionari di cui si è detto

furono assai tolleranti, considerando le dimensioni del

fatto anomalo; tale tolleranza era il risultato di: primo,

esperimenti segreti effettuati nottetempo che li avevano

convinti di come poco o nulla si potesse operare al fine di

rimuovere o distruggere il pallone; e, secondo, l’indubbio

calore (non privo di una certa ostilità, come si è detto

poc’anzi) dimostrato dai comuni cittadini nei riguardi del

pallone.

Poiché un singolo pallone è ampiamente sufficiente per

un’intera vita di meditazione sui palloni, ogni cittadino

espresse, nella presa di posizione da lui assunta, tutto un

complesso di prese di posizione. Vi fu forse chi identificò

il pallone con il concetto di oscurare, nel senso della frase:

Il grande pallone oscurò il cielo di Manhattan altrimenti

terso e radioso. Cioè, il pallone rappresentava, secondo il

convincimento di quella persona, una frode, un qualcosa

di inferiore rispetto al cielo che si trovava lassù in precedenza,

un elemento interposto tra la gente e il suo “cielo”.

Ma, in realtà, era gennaio, il cielo era buio e brutto; non

uno di quei cieli da guardare standosene comodamente

sdraiati a pancia all’aria per strada, e da guardare con

piacere, a meno che uno non provi piacere a essere minacciato,

e magari seviziato. Tanto più che la parte inferiore

del pallone era di gradevole effetto vista dal basso,

già si è notato, con i suoi grigi e i suoi marroni, alternati e

contrastati da morbidi gialli insoliti con sfumature brune.

E pertanto, benché quella persona fosse dominata dal

concetto di oscurare, ci doveva essere in lui indubbiamente

una sottile vena di piacere, in lotta con la sensazione

primigenia.

Una diversa persona, viceversa, forse includeva intimamente

il pallone in un insieme di gratificazioni non preventivate,

come quando il principale della ditta entra e ti

dice: “Ecco qua, Henry, ho messo insieme questo bel fascio

di banconote per te, perché stiamo andando a gonfie

vele, e io personalmente apprezzo moltissimo il tuo modo

di frantumare i tulipani, operazione senza la quale il tuo

reparto andrebbe male, o quanto meno non così bene come

va”. Per costui il pallone era forse un’esperienza di tipo

eroico, un “giorno da leoni”, anche se magari un’esperienza

male interpretata.

Un altro individuo poté forse osservare: “Senza il precedente

di... non si può affermare con certezza che... esisterebbe

nella sua forma attuale”, incontrando anche

molti consensi, e magari qualche dissenso. Vennero introdotti

i concetti di “gonfiore” e di “fluttuazione”, come

pure le idee di sogno e responsabilità. Altri s’addentraro

no in fantasie minuziosamente particolareggiate connesse

in fondo con il desiderio di perdersi nel pallone oppure

di divorarlo. La natura di tali desideri, sepolti in profondità

e di fatto ignorati, era talmente intima e personale

che quasi non se ne parlò. Eppure si dà per certo che ebbero

non piccola diffusione. Si sostenne anche che la cosa

più importante fosse quel che si provava stando sotto il

pallone: alcuni sostenevano di sentirsi al caldo e al sicuro

come mai in precedenza, mentre gli avversari del pallone

si sentivano, o asserivano di sentirsi, come schiacciati,

una sensazione di “pesantezza”.

Le opinioni critiche erano divise:

“colate mostruose”

La gente prese, particolare curioso, a indicare la propria

posizione facendo riferimento a certi settori del paldonald

lone: “Ti aspetto nel punto dove si abbassa sulla Quarantasettesima

Strada, fin quasi a toccare il marciapiede, proprio

vicino alla Alamo Chile House”, oppure: “Perché

non ce ne andiamo in cima a prendere una boccata d’aria,

e magari a fare anche due passi, lassù dove forma una linea

curva fino alla facciata della Galleria d’Arte Moderna...”

Entro periodi di tempo limitati, certe intersezioni

marginali creavano degli accessi, o anche “passaggi soffici,

caldi, indolenti”, nei quali... Ma è improprio parlare di

“intersezioni marginali”: ogni intersezione era cruciale,

nessuna poteva essere trascurata (visto che, passeggiando

nei paraggi, non si poteva fare a meno di notare qualcuno

capace di attirare su di sé l’attenzione esibendosi all’improvviso

in esercizi acrobatici sempre diversi, in scalate

rischiose e spettacolari). Ogni intersezione era cruciale,

fosse punto d’incontro fra pallone e edificio, punto d’incontro

fra pallone e uomo, o anche punto d’incontro fra

pallone e pallone.

Qualcuno avanzò l’ipotesi che forse, in definitiva, ciò

che più si ammirava, ciò che più stupiva nel pallone era la

sua peculiarità di non essere un’entità limitata, o in qualche

modo definita. A volte un gonfiore, una protuberanza

o una sottosezione qualsiasi si spingeva di propria iniziativa

per un bel tratto verso est, fino al fiume, in modo del

tutto analogo al movimento di un esercito su una mappa,

quale si può notare in un quartier generale assai lontano

dalla prima linea. Quindi quella stessa porzione, o sottosezione

qualsiasi avrebbe anche potuto, come in effetti

avveniva, venire ricacciata o magari ritirarsi di propria

iniziativa fino al punto di partenza e magari su nuove posizioni.

La mattina seguente quella stessa porzione poteva

avere assunto una nuova configurazione oppure essere

sparita del tutto. Questa facoltà del pallone di forgiarsi da

solo, mutando di continuo, era molto ammirata, soprattutto

da gente la cui vita aveva una struttura piuttosto rigida:

gente per la quale il cambiamento, per quanto desiderato,

non era certo a portata di mano. Il pallone, durante

i ventidue giorni della sua esistenza, consentì, nella

sua casualità, di far vagare liberalmente l’io di molti, in

contrapposizione con la rete di sentieri precisi, squadrati,

sotto i nostri piedi. Il cospicuo grado di specializzazione

ormai comunemente richiesto, e la conseguente preferenza

per impieghi a lungo termine, sono stati determinati

dall’importanza sempre crescente, virtualmente in ogni

tipo di lavorazione, di macchinari molto complessi. Col

crescere di tale tendenza, un numero sempre maggiore di

persone, tormentate da un penoso senso di inadeguatezza,

ricercherà soluzioni per le quali il pallone può venir

considerato come un prototipo, o “abbozzo”.

Ci incontrammo sotto il pallone, al tuo ritorno dalla

Norvegia. Mi chiedesti se era mio; ti risposi di sì. Il pallone,

dissi, è una spontanea apertura autobiografica, connessa

con il disagio da me provato in tua assenza, e con

l’astinenza sessuale, ma ora che il tuo soggiorno a Bergen

è terminato, esso non è più necessario e neppure pertinente.

Rimuovere il pallone non fu difficile: autofurgoni

con rimorchio portarono via il telone ormai sgonfio, che

ora giace in un magazzino nella West Virginia, in attesa di

un nuovo periodo d’infelicità. Un giorno, chissà, quando

io e te avremo litigato.

In tempi preistorici, gli uomini furono probabilmente predati dai grandi felini, e anche dai leoni. Nel mondo moderno, gli attacchi di leoni nei confronti dell'uomo sono abbastanza rari, quasi impossibili, e in genere avvengono solo in casi particolari e da parte di leoni affamati. Sono stati tuttavia registrati alcuni casi storici di leoni che avevano sviluppato una evidente preferenza per la carne umana, per esempio il caso dei mangiatori di uomini dello Tsavo e del mangiatore di uomini di Mfuwe. Sono stati anche registrati casi di attacchi agli umani da parte di leoni in cattività.

Il leone non è innocuo per gli uomini.

The Cast

JAMES WATSON, wisecracking 25-year-old American, recently arrived in England

FRANCIS CRICK, British counterpart; not as ably cast as, say, Colin Firth; married; more sedate, but getting a giggly rush out of his new sidekick

ROSALIND FRANKLIN, quiet, self-assured crystallographer with no patience for Honest Jim’s irritating flirty brilliance, nor any desire to go halfsies on the research. Also, she speaks French.

MAURICE WILKINS. He’s this other guy.

DR. JOYCE BROTHERS, quasi-therapist and pseudo-cultural commentator. She is not involved in this case.

The Immediate Background

Rosy was a skilled X-ray diffracter, snapping the shots that likely clarified the double-helix structure of DNA while Jim and Francis were out tinkering ad nauseam with so many helices they were actually—God’s honest truth (actually, no)—nauseous. They’d been trying to outwit the older, more famous, more likely discoverer, Linus Pauling, in a race to nail this thing down. Jim and Francis sort of, how do we say, pilfered the pics from Rosy’s lab, kept it on the QT, and skated to everlasting fame. She died of cancer shortly thereafter, and Watson and Crick took the Nobel, without her, in 1962. By the bye, Jim’s tell-all, The Double Helix, is a smidgen less than gracious toward the altogether reputable Dr. Franklin.
